Finally the big day has arrived. As of today I am officially 40 years old. It’s been a long year keeping up with this blog. For every reason I had that made me sad about getting older, I found one that made me happy. So it was worth it.

It’s not as bad as I thought it would be. I’m in Australia on vacation soaking up lots of fun and sun. I surfed for the first time in my life yesterday and managed to stand up on my board every time I caught a wave and looked pretty cool while doing it. I got carded for I.D. when I entered a bar last night. I woke up this morning to wonderful presents and cards and Facebook birthday wishes.

Thanks to all my friends who read my posts often and thanks to those who landed here only by chance.

It was fun. It made me feel better about it all.

I am enjoying my travels around Australia so much that I keep forgetting that I’m turning 40 in just days. I’m really looking forward to it now. I have a few cards with me that friends gave me before I left that I get to open on the actual day. I think my hubby has a little surprise or too up his sleeve as well. It’s gonna be awesome!!!

I had a moment of nostalgia last night. As my hubby and I were walking back from a bar in Sydney a party bus went by filled with young backpackers and travellers. I though of myself about 15 years ago when I too did the backpacking thing and partied my face off every single night. They were dancing on the bus and the music was pumping. I smiled and thought back to all my years of doing that. It really is the end of an era, but the beginning of a new one too.

I’ve arrived in Sydney, Australia and have officially begun the countdown. Only 10 days until I turn 40. I’m living every last day to the fullest. Gotta make the most of it.

I’m flying to Australia tonight. I’ve been planning and looking forward to this for almost one year and it’s finally here. I’ll try and find time to update you all on the final few days of my 39th year. See you on the other side of the world.

Turning 40 is now imminent! In a mere 14 days (minus the one day I lose while traveling to Australia) I will be a 40-year-old woman. To get me in the spirit, several of my friends set up some early birthday celebrations before I leave on my trip. Between dinner, drinks, cupcakes and many heart-warming cards, there was no reason to be depressed and tons of reasons to get excited for my big day. I can honestly say, I’m kind of pumped about it and can’t wait for it to actually arrive.

Bangs or Botox? That was the question being discussed over drinks and dinner last week. One girl at the table had faced this exact dilemma recently and opted for bangs. Ever since that conversation I’m obsessed all over again with the possibility of bangs. I definitely see bangs in my future once the faint lines in my forehead really dig in for good, especially because the ideas of needles in my forehead totally freaks me out.

I’m a bit of a Survivor fan and happened to be watching the Heroes vs. Villains series on right now. Jerri Manthey is back 10 or so years after her first appearance. Now in her mid-thirties I would guess, she is one of the older females on the show this time around. In this past episode she wasn’t getting along very well with one of the younger girl players. Behind Jerri’s back, the younger player referred to Jerri as a “bitter old cougar.” OUCH. Even though I’m not Jerri, I still felt the sting of that comment. A few years back I would have laughed along with everyone else, but now, it doesn’t seem as hilarious.

Funny how as teenagers all we aspire to do is go out. It starts out as movies and parties. Progresses to bars and clubs. And eventually leads to holidays far away from home. Then just when it seems like you’ve become a pro at it all, suddenly it begins to reverse. Since I hit 36sh it seems as if my social life is starting to rewind. I’ve gone from the big club scene to more laid-back bars and chilled-out lounges. Dinner get-togethers or movie night at a friend’s house is now on the agenda again, even on a Saturday night. I’m gonna put the brakes on this slide soon, before I find myself staying home to wash my hair.

Here’s the secret to being happy on your 40th birthday. Create a distraction. And by that I mean, do something that totally takes your mind off it. I’m so busy planning for my trip to Australia right now that I barely have any pity time left over to lament my impending birthday.

I’ve picked the perfect surf town on the east coast to spend my official day of birth. Instead of crying in my drink and feeling sad about getting older, I plan on watching the sun set at the beach and celebrating with many, many yummy cocktails.

I’m still trying to figure out the secret to staying happy long after the birthday and trip, and distraction, are over. I’ll have to keep you posted on that one.
